Scribes began to abbreviate words in order to save time writing and also to be able to use less space on a manuscript page (folio).  One of the most common abbreviations is the -us symbol, used to indicate that a word is missing the letters us at the end of a word .  Usually it resembles a 9:

Although you must always read for content, when you see this small symbol at the end of a word, usually you should know to add the letters -us.  For example,

becomes eius.
