Avicenna says: "But of the apprehending faculties within, some apprehend sensible forms, and some apprehend intentions of sensible things. Moreover, some of the apprehending faculties are those which apprehend and do work at the same time, and some apprehend but do not work, and some apprehend principally and some secondly."
