Bartholomew the Englishman

On the Maid

Introduction by Juris Lidaka

Bartholomew says: "The girl (puella) is so called because she is pure as the pupil (pupilla) of the eye, as Isidore [Etymologies 11.1] says. Above all the things which are valued in a girl, modesty is valued most highly. Girls are to be considered as warm, moist and delicate in their disposition, graceful; flexible and beautiful in the disposition of their bodies; and modest, timid and pleasant in the disposition of their minds. Because of this they are disciplined in their manner of composing their appearance, cautious and quiet in their speech, and refined in their dress."
