Why There is No Singing in Heaven

Excerpted from De universo creaturarum 1.2.43

But there is a question about whether there will be choruses, or ring dances, and gesticulations in that state of glory.

And the words of the wise who have gone before us among Christian people partly seem to aggravate the problem and make it more difficult, since they are found to have clearly [affirmed] that there will be. Nature itself and the experience of natural things seem to insinuate, in fact seem to testify, as much. For human beings do not sustain [even] the modest joys of the present state without moving their bodies and almost [all] their particular members. For it is obvious to you how the joy arising in your soul moves your mouth, and the motion called laughter changes your whole face.

Respondendum igitur videtur hic, vera ac spiritualia gaudia non inundare in corpora humana gesticulationes aut effigiationes huiusmodi, et hoc est quoniam, ut ait quidem ex sapientibus verum gaudium res severa est, hoc est, non frangens, non emolliens, non dissolvens gaudentem, quin potius confortans et erigens ipsum.

Non leviter autem moveri potest aliquis si quis dixerit quod ibi dabuntur ore laudes creatori, cum decentissimum ac debitum modis omnibus per se videatur et corde et ore ibi potissimum laudari creatorem ab his in quos incogitabiliter profusa erit beneficentia largitatis ipsius.

Amplius, ipsa virtus gratitudinis nec completa fore in operationibus suis videri potest, si non erumpit in voces collaudationum, benedictionum, et glorificationum creatoris.

Dicet autem fortassis aliquis quia vocalis illa collaudatio supervacua esset ibi, propter id quod in praecedentibus audivisti, videlicet quoniam virtus vocalis et interpretiva ad alterum tantum sunt et operationes propter indigentiam et imperfectionem alienam.
